Hospital-basedFrequently Asked Questions
Common questions from parents about occupational therapy and our services.
Paediatric Occupational Therapy helps children develop the skills they need for daily living, learning, and play. We focus on fine motor skills, sensory processing, self-care, handwriting, and social-emotional development. Our goal is to help every child participate fully in their daily activities.
Sensory Integration therapy helps children who have difficulty processing sensory information from their environment. This might show as being overly sensitive to sounds, textures, or movement, or seeking out intense sensory experiences. Our therapists use specialised equipment and activities to help children respond more appropriately to sensory input.
Signs that your child might benefit from OT include: difficulty with fine motor tasks like cutting or writing, challenges with self-care (dressing, eating), sensory sensitivities or seeking behaviours, difficulty sitting still or paying attention, emotional regulation challenges, or developmental delays. If you're unsure, we offer consultations to discuss your concerns.
The first appointment typically involves a comprehensive assessment. We'll discuss your concerns, observe your child at play, and conduct standardised assessments as needed. This helps us understand your child's strengths and challenges so we can create an individualised treatment plan. Parents are encouraged to participate and ask questions.
Session frequency depends on your child's individual needs and goals. Most children attend weekly sessions, though some may benefit from more or less frequent appointments. We'll discuss recommendations after the initial assessment and adjust as your child progresses.
Most medical aids in South Africa do cover Occupational Therapy services. Coverage varies by plan, so we recommend checking with your medical aid about your specific benefits. We can provide the necessary documentation and codes for claiming.
Yes! We have therapy rooms at multiple schools across the West Coast and Northern Suburbs. School-based therapy is convenient for families and allows us to collaborate closely with teachers. Check our locations to see if we're at your child's school.
Parent involvement is crucial for success. We provide home programmes with activities you can do daily, explain strategies for managing challenges, and keep you informed of progress. We believe in empowering families with the knowledge and tools to support their child's development.
